SPEED, POWER and CONTROL - Start with Innovation
Introduced at EAA AirVenture 2018, Barracuda is the latest design from Lancair’s legendary innovators. A beautiful 2-place composite single with exceptional performance and style at an affordable price point.
Power to climb. Speed to take you to new places. The innovation that only Lancair can bring you. Three decades after revolutionizing the world of two-seat aircraft, a rich history of unparalleled innovation and record-setting performance continues with the Lancair Barracuda. Updated and optimized from tip to tail, Barracuda is faster, more agile and easier to build than its predecessors. Barracuda represents years of continual research, testing and invaluable input from Lancair builders and flyers around the globe.
Featuring the innovative auto-retracting nose gear pioneered on the Lancair Mako, Barracuda offers most of the speed and responsiveness of a full-retractable gear aircraft with the simplicity and cost savings of a fixed-gear model. In fact, Barracuda easily cruises at over 230 mph with its 310 hp IO-550-N 6-cylinder engine, offering comfort and range to spare —and all with the same great flight characteristics pilots have come to expect from Lancair.
One Very Comfortable SPEEDSTER
Lancair engineers didn’t stop with performance, durability and good looks when they completely redesigned the two-seat Lancair. Inside the cabin, creature comforts, ergonomics and luxury are foremost customer considerations. A wider and taller cabin (43.5” wide, 44.5” tall) now offers generous shoulder and headroom, providing valuable space for its occupants.
The large canopy affords unobstructed visibility and outstanding views in all directions, which comes in handy when you are aggressively climbing after your takeoff roll. And the roomy baggage area makes it possible to comfortably stow everything for your cross-country trip—including luggage, golf bags and fishing rods.
A Perfect Shape from the Perfect MATERIALS.
Like every Lancair, Barracuda’s major airframe is constructed of advanced composite materials. Cured at 270 degrees Fahrenheit under vacuum, these NASA-tested, epoxy-based composites are among the lightest, strongest and stiffest materials known.
The high-temperature, pre-impregnated e-glass and/or carbon fiber systems, combined with Nomex/honeycomb core materials, are considered the supreme composite airframe materials worldwide.
This combination allows for compound aerodynamic shapes, such as the Legacy’s sculptured fuselage and double-taper wing, leaving no drag-producing rivets or lap joints.
Corrosion resistant, with a nearly infinite fatigue life and virtually non-flammable, these composite materials also extend the life of your investment. Lancair airframes will easily outlive any aluminum airframe when properly maintained. And, as Lancair builders will tell you, composites are easier to work with and far easier to repair.
CAPABILITY and CONFIDENCE – An Unequalled Airplane for Pilots
We are constantly exploring new ways to improve our aircraft. Lancair’s forward-thinking, aerodynamic designs meet the highest expectations and in many ways surpass traditional aircraft quality.
Wing design is of paramount importance to any aircraft and Lancair’s design team has painstakingly fine-tuned Barracuda’s wing to optimize it’s performance. The wing had to perform up to the high speeds that pilots expect from Lancair aircraft, combined with an increased emphasis on low speed handling and stability.
The wing has a unique double taper to maximize lift distribution from root to tip. This also allowed us to eliminate all “washout” which can compromise efficiency. The airfoil design creates extensive laminar flow across more than 50% of the surface resulting in a very carefully “tuned” wing design, which enhances overall aircraft performance. Roll control is light, snappy and balanced—a trademark of Lancair designs since the beginning. Plus, a relatively thick chord aids strength while providing ample room for fuel (up to 65 gallons).
In short, the Barracuda wing offers a lower stall speed, a better roll rate, improved low-speed handling and higher top speeds. The aircraft is ideal for high-speed cruising, meaning a trip from Seattle to Las Vegas or New York to the Florida Keys in just hours. With its nimble roll rate of 150 degrees per second and very solid control stick forces, flying the plane is a joy!
At the other end of the performance spectrum, the Legacy’s lowspeed roll control is nothing short of remarkable, with stall behavior that is “straight ahead.” The addition of simplified fowler-action flaps further increases the wing’s maximum lift coefficient to enhance this low-speed handling without any annoying forward pitch moment upon deployment. Translation? Slower approaches and shorter landing distances, providing a new level of safety.
PERFORMANCE from the ground up
In our absolute passion to produce the world’s perfect aircraft, Lancair engineers are committed to the ideas that perfection of the whole can be accomplished only through perfection of the smallest details. The instructions are printed on 11” x 17” paper and clearly illustrated for an easy, trouble-free construction.
Lastly, the most difficult and tedious assemblies are performed in our well-equipped facilities by expert Lancair technicians, while still adhering to the 51% rule.
Lancair’s impeccable safety record and record-setting performance are the ultimate outcome of this rigorous testing process. You can rest assured that your Barracuda is one of the best-engineered aircraft in the skies. Our pre-flight inspection, flight test and flight training programs are the premier programs in the entire industry. They will instill confidence and ensure safety with your finished Lancair.
When you build your Barracuda, you’ll receive unlimited, free technical assistance, five days a week, eight hours a day—for life. In conjunction with a very comprehensive, graphically detailed builders instruction manual, Lancair staff is available to advise our builders on all aspects of your assembly, from spinner to tail. This assistance also includes advice on powerplant, propeller selection, avionics and panel layout, final system installations, and placement options.
Throughout this assistance, our customers enjoy the interaction they have with fellow Lancair owners and builders, sharing best practices, informational tips and time-saving activities, building on the already high level of pride and passion for this wonderful aircraft.
